Hockley's name hasn't changed since Anglo-Saxon occupation, as Hockley is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning 'a small hill'. The town is home to many notable buildings, including the church of St Peter and Paul with the oldest part of it being from the 12th century. Hockley also has a Victorian Pump Room that was built to originaly be a spa in 1842 after a medicinal spring was discovered in 1838.
